Your questions about merchant accounts

Charles asks…

How do credit card merchant accounts work?

Like after a customer uses their card, where do the funds go?
What do I need to do with the receipts/card slips?

Thank you!
ALSO: I know the account has to be linked to my bank account, how long after the customer uses their card will it appear in my bank account?

admin answers:

Hello,

First Step= Customer comes to your site and do checkout and enter his details .. if a programmer already integrated your shopping cart with your credit card billing gateway .. the payment details go internally and they get a response (Order Successful, Order Failed).

Second step= Buyer get notified .. and received a slip ..

Third Step= You must have a backoffice (gateway panel) where you can login and view the transactions occured everyday etc.

like at www.activemerchant.com they provide gateway along with virtual terminal to process credit cards manually too by entering into their secure area to charge credit cards.

Laura asks…

Merchant Accounts that don’t do credit checks or accept a poor credit history?

I’m looking for merchant account which accepts people with bad credit or don’t do credit checks, I’v seen a few… any recommendations?

admin answers:

ooh you’ll find it near impossible.
If your looking for payments for a web based business, paypal is your best bet as you can still take all major cred cards/deb cards

Jenny asks…

Recommend any reliable but inexpensive merchant accounts for low volume home business?

I have a low volume home business that I do for fun in my spare time. I cannot use paypal anymore because my art is considered “adult in nature” even though I have to disagree. Paypal are just nazis.

I want to be able to accept credit card payments, and am looking for a fairly inexpensive way to do this. Any recommendations?

admin answers:

Check with your bank to get the names of credit card clearing organizations near you. The cost per transaction is pretty steep… 3% is not uncommon. But they will provide the channel through which you can funnel credit transactions…

Good Luck!

Chris asks…

Do all merchant accounts apart from paypal; accept paypal payments?

All the relevant help and info appreciated, thanks all.

admin answers:

If you want a merchant account to sell a particular product try Plimus or 2-Checkout.

Both offer payment + digital delivery of your goods through an integrated interface. It really depends on how you plan to use your merchant account — eg for Ebay auctions, etc.

Daniel asks…

Where to go for merchant accounts?

I have a website where I bill my customers $750 every 3 months. I have 30 or so customers. My existing merchant account takes a percentage (about 1.5%) of each transaction plus a monthly fee. Is there anything cheaper? I dont want someone to take 1.5% of my gross companys profit just for being able to accept credit/debit card payments. There must be an easier way. Thanks for your help!

Your questions about credit card processing

Thomas asks…

What company offers the best credit card processing rates?

I am looking for a new company to process my businesses credit card transactions. Can anyone tell me what company has the cheapest processing rates?

admin answers:

If you are truly looking for the cheapest solution possible you will need to integrate payment gateway software to your site and contact a large merchant bank that you have an existing relationship with, like BofA – Wells Fargo – Wachovia – Chase Paymentech. Then you will need to find someone willing to haggle with you. You should be able to get something like $0.10 and 2.05% for qualified Visa/MC transactions. If you don’t want to integrate and locally maintain your own gateway, pay an additional $0.10 per transaction for a 3rd party hosted solution.

Joseph asks…

What factors will I consider when looking for a credit card processing company?

I would like to put up a store with physical address as well as an online store business. Since I will accept payments from credit cards, I need to have a credit card processing company. What factors should I consider when looking for a credit card processing company?

admin answers:

Do not lease credit card equipment or software it is a complete rip off. Buy it or get it for free.
FREE equipment
NO application fee
NO start up cost
NO annual fee
Low or NO monthly minimum
Low discount rate
Low transaction fee- (batch fee it is also called)
FREE training for you and all your employees.
Length of time you are paid in your account.

Also beware on websites that do not post their discount rates and transaction fees. And no phone numbers to call them. This is because they give different people different quotes, and don’t want people to call the company.Very sneaky companies do that. I have done tons of research on this.

Read ALL contracts before you sign them.Protect you and your business.Don’t just go by what someone tells you. Because there are too many people out there that tell you one thing and then you sign with them.Later to find out everything they said was not true at all. So be carefull! Take your time, don’t be fooled or taken advantage of.

The processing company I use is Simple Payment Systems. They beat all quotes from other companies, and I never ever had a problem with them. They give you free software with a shopping cart to sell online and free credit card equipment of your choice!
Best Wishes!

Sandra asks…

What are some of the hidden credit card processing surcharges I need to know?

I just got my first credit card processing monthly statement bill and it was way up high than I expected. I scrutinized the items and I discover I incurred surcharges. What are some of the hidden surcharges I need to know?

admin answers:

Check the contract you signed. There should be a schedule of your rates and fees attached. You need to call your credit card processor’s customer service number and have them review your statement with you in detail to make sure you were charged correctly. The main reason most merchants pay more than they expect is because they expect to be charged the rate quoted. That only happens when the transaction is “qualified”. That means that the transaction is swiped and reads in the machine and the card itself is not subject to surcharges, such as an airline mileage card in some cases. If the magnetic stripe doesn’t read or it is a phone order and you have to key the card number the transaction downgrades and surcharges apply. That is where some processors make their profits because they charge you more than the card associations charge them for those transactions. If that’s the case, about the only thing you can do is try to make sure you get set up with an application to key in the zip code on phone orders to try to minimize your downgrade charges and check your contract for the expiration date so you can negotiate a better one next time.

Maria asks…

What is the function of a credit card processing company? And What connection does it have with banks?

I want to know the primary roles of a credit card processing company (ex. Flagship, First Data) and how do they function? Are they an independent company apart from the bank?

admin answers:

Yes, they are an independent company separate from the bank, and they provide a number of services to banks.

Consider you have just set up a small bank, and you want to issue (for example) Visa cards. There’s a lot processes and infrastructure you would need to set up, and the processor can provide one (or all) of these services on your behalf if you choose to engage them:

– Card production: Printing and embossing the cards, and performing the cryptography to generate and mail the PIN numbers.

– Authorization: Providing computing services to authorize transactions against a credit limit.

– Fraud detection: Providing computing services to check incoming transactions against likely fraud (i.e. a transaction comes from Russia, but you did one in Atlanta two hours ago)

– Connection to networks: The authorization system has to be certified and connected to Visa and/or MasterCard

– Settlement: Clearing the transactions after authorization

– Chargeback: Managing the arbitration of dispute cases when a customer says he didn’t perform a transaction, or disputes the amount

In addition, the processing companies provide the same services for issuing branded credit cards which aren’t associated with a bank – for example, a football team or an airline.

Helen asks…

Is it legal for merchants to charge credit card processing fees to the consumer?

Have frequently experienced this with travel agencies when I use my credit card. The processing fee of 2% is charged to me, thus would end up using Nets to avoid it. There is also a fear that the business may wind up after you pay upfront. Can any action be taken against them? Who are the watchdogs that I can report this to?

admin answers:

u need to ask them first before u allow them to swipe ur card,

and yes it is legal, but u can always negotiate.

Your questions about credit card machines

Chris asks…

why do gas stations credit card machines make you pull your credit card out really fast?

admin answers:

Because if you pull it slowly, you might actually stop or slightly back up, giving a bad reading on the magnetic stripe. That’s why cashiers swipe them quickly as well, although sometimes, they’re ridiculous.

Just make sure you pull smoothly and straight out, so the reader can get a good read on the stripe. I pull mine out about as fast as I put it in.

Laura asks…

How do credit card processing machines work?

is it better to get one through my bank or through a company that sell them?

admin answers:

Either one is fine. Best thing to do is shop around on what rates you can get first! Accepting cc can be costly and companies charge diff rates for diff ways you will be using them. Ex would be if the majority of your cards will be swiped vs manually punched in. Some companies will give you a discounted rate if you enter in the street address, zip and v code from the back of the card.

Cc companies have several diff fees associated with using them. A flat fee for each purchase ran thru….this is usually 2-3.5% of the transaction total. Then some companies charge a monthly statement fee……I know Discover charged us $5 a month even if we didn’t take any cards that month. Also, some companies have a year end statement that is generated and they will charge extra for that.

You can buy a machine pretty much anywhere and can find used ones on the market. Be sure and check on the paper costs, the swiping machine and the name plate, and carbon receipts to use with them.

If my memory recalls correctly, by the end of all the transactions and fees and such, it cost us about 4.2% of each sale. Which is alot if you do large volumes. BUT, you do get your money right away.

We paid $400 for a used machine. You can expect to pay $500-$1000 for a new one.

Jenny asks…

I’m starting a small business. Why are credit card machines practically free on ebay?? How do they work??

admin answers:

Owning a credit card machine is only part of the process of accepting credit card payments in your business. Moreover, you have to make sure that you get one that is compatible with the company who is going to process your transactions.

Bottom line is that you should not purchase a credit card machine from E-bay unless you know exactly what you are buying.

Go to your local bank and tell them that you would like to accept credit cards payments in your business. They will help you with exactly what you need.

If the bank says that it will charge you for the machine then you should find out exactly what brand and make of machine it would be. Then go on E-bay and check it out to see if the price is competitive with the bank’s offer.

Credit card processing is very simple so don’t be afraid to explore it with your bank.

Good luck with the business.

Mark asks…

How do credit card payments machines work?

admin answers:

Each credit card has a magnetic strip and the machine reads the strip in binary code (computer language) and reads the details of the card and prepares it to be sent to the credit card network where you are either accepted or declined.

David asks…

Anybody know anything about wireless credit card machines that run over cell phone lines?

Your questions about mobile merchant

Ruth asks…

mobile broadband?

Having puchased a mobile broadband dongle, with 3 gigabite of airtime for £15, it used all of the airtime in just 2 hrs, trying to get in touch with 3 Mobile (rippoff Merchants) is like watching paint dry, the will not respond.. If anybody out there
is usig one of these Mobile dongles ,perhaps they could enlighten me of what im doing wrong. or is this one big con.
Tell me ive not been ripped again…Please don’t advise trading standards that would mean involvement that never ends.
Sensible replys very welcome, thanks Dave

admin answers:

It’s not a big con but you do need to be careful, from what i’ve read everything you do counts towards your 3gig, like loading a web page viewing a movie trailer even uploads are counted too i think, movie downloads like torrents which download and upload all the time should be avoided like the plague.
hope this helps

Carol asks…

If you have Boost prepaid mobile svc, and debits of $9.99 have been taken without your knowledge, write me.?

Boost mobile is allowing a merchant company “QPass” to debit accounts without customer knowledge, yet Boost claims they don’t do bussiness with “QPass, New Mot”. This is occurring as an e-commerce puchase on prepaid Boost accounts. They claim also, that it is third party messaging. I have been Ripped Off twice. totaling $$19.98. I changed my mobile number and they still debited my account. I was told by Boost, “because the numbers were still linked.” I suggest, who ever has Boost prepaid, regularly check your account activity at www.boostmobile.com. Boost also said “they won’t refund accounts for third party charges.” I have some contact information if any one is interested. The Boost representative I spoke with claims that Boost is taking legal action. I think it’s Bull Crap!! Mean while Boost prepaid customers are being ripped off of their hard working earned dollars and can’t get their money back. I’m going to the media, I hate people taking my money. Times are hard enough. email me
Boost representative also told me “they have other customers to complain.” “That is why they are taking legal action against QPass”
I have not signed up for any additional svcs or ringtones.

Jenny asks…

Merchant accounts?

I am a small business and want the best protection for my customers, I have a Mobile tire company and want to know if it is best to get a merchant account from a bank or the cheeper way from those companies that offer the same machine at a fraction of the cost or sometimes free. is there a catch? what should I do?
Thanks.

admin answers:

I would go with a direct processing company because they do the processing for the banks. Which in turn can pass on savings for you. Instead of the banks getting a percentage on your sales also or charging you for equipment ect. Take your time and shop around.
When I did, I found Simple Payment Systems, they give you credit card acceptance software free for your web site. And also give you the credit card terminals for free.I think Simple Payment Systems is truly the absolute best for credit card and electronic check processing. (The electronic check processes the check like a credit card.) So the check is deposited into your account ASAP from your business. If it is bad you know right away. I have done my research for a long time. They give you free equipment, free training, free software- with a check out cart! (if you have a web site also that you want to sell tires on.) They beat discount rate quotes that you give them too. They have 24 hour live help, which is handy. Make sure you tell them you want the free program. Why purchase or lease equipment if you don’t have to? We switched from another company over to them. And have never been happier. Go to their web site and call them or fill out the form and they can contact you. I did countless hours of research! Trust me they are the BEST in my opinion.
Best wishes!

Maria asks…

how safe is to send copies of my credit card, identity card and card statement either by email or by fax?

i have been trying to download some mobile software from the internet. but i’ve been told that my country has been blacklisted due to the high rate of identity fraud emanating from some unsavory citizens. However I’ve been told that I can register my card by faxing or emailing copies of my credit card, identity card and credit card statement to the merchant. Is this safe?

admin answers:

Not at all. You are handing over all of the components someone would need to commit identity theft. There is no reason anyone should be asked for these things, especially a silly reason as a “blacklisted” country. Every country has unsavory citizens, and no smart business would blacklist a whole country and cut off all of the law-abiding citizens.

Using 2 merchant accounts for 1 business?

I am wondering if I will be able to use 2 different merchant accounts for one particular business. Both merchant accounts we opened specifically for this business. They are with different companies. I am wondering if we will be able to use both merchant accounts for the same business?

admin answers:

You definitely can use two merchant accounts for one business. Some businesses who have difficulty getting a high enough limit on their merchant account do this very thing in order to process successfully for the entire month.

The one think you can’t do is use one merchant account for two businesses. That’s called factoring and is VERY bad. But you’re not doing that so you’re ok. :)

Your questions about merchant account

Donna asks…

What happens when a merchant account needs a person but an enterprise needs to be the owner of the account?

A merchant account application is asking for a single person to be the owner of the account, however there will be no single owner it will be an enterprise.

admin answers:

I will try to shed some light for you on the merchant account application process. Hopefully it will help you understand what exactly is required in the application.

In a merchant account application you will provide details about both your business and your business’ owners, including address (business and personal), social security number, tax ID (if applicable), phone numbers, email address, web address, bank account info, etc. The business owners may be more than one, just as it is in your case, and you will provide personal information for all of them.

Be advised that no person from your organization will own the merchant account and the application is not about owning it. The merchant account will provide a way for your company to accept payments and your company’s money will then be deposited into your company’s bank account, not into one of the owners’ accounts.

The application does ask you for a “Contact Person.” This is different. A contact person is the one representative (whether it is an owner or not) of your organization that your merchant account provider will contact whenever they need to talk to someone about something. That is all.

Sandra asks…

How much does it cost to get a merchant account for online order, and which do you recommend?

I don’t know very much about merchant account, but I’m a retailer and do business selling products online. Which merchant account do you recommend, how much is the monthly fee and which do you recommend in addition?

admin answers:

I would be careful which one i choose. you have to figure out the cost per transaction they charge. You want to be sure thatnthey will help you, if your machine quits working-you have to be sure they will send you your money when it’s due. I would try locally and have them come to you and discuss
their set-up.

How to open up merchant account and shipping account online so i can sell my products via the internet?

Helen asks…

What’s difference between merchant account and affiliate account?

Hi. What’s difference between merchant account and affiliate account in an affiliate program?

Can you describe each one? Thanks.

admin answers:

On a directory like Clickbank, a merchant account is held by the person who provides the product, like an eBook. And the Affiliate is the person who promotes the sale of that same eBook (or any other product) through Adwords, blogs, articles, etc.

Your questions about wireless terminals

David asks…

Can you link WYSE thin clients to wireless switch?

I have been looking into wireless solutions for several of my companies citrix terminals and haven’t found much. WYSE does have a USB wireless adapter but I’ve heard it doesn’t work that great. I was thinking about hooking them up to a small wireless switch (linksys perhaps) as we have a wireless network that’s rather robust with several WAPs throughout the plant. Any suggestions as far as compatible wireless enabled solutions would be greatly appreciated.

admin answers:

Hi Matt: You can use an Ethernet to Wireless Bridge. This will get you onto the network after setting up the bridge for your network specs (wep, wpa, passcode etc). we have sevaral wyse winterminals running labelers and printers this way.

How to connect to wireless network using Ubuntu terminal?

Yesterday I accomplished this task with 3 commands
sudo iwlist scan
sudo iwconfig eth1 essid “linksys”
sudo dhclient eth1

Do i still need a manual imprinter if I get PayPal Merchant Services?

If I process credit card payments using PayPal Merchant services, do I still need to get a manual imprinter and plate so I can keep a record of the transaction or do all disputes go to PayPal and that’s that ?

admin answers:

You definitely want to have one as it dramatically increases your chances of wining a dispute. It proves that the customer was present which reduces their opportunity to claim a variety of reasons for the dispute. Plus, if you lose your dispute with Paypal, you can still challenge them in court and use it to prove the purchase was legitimate.

can i use intuits merchant services on my wordpress site?

i am having someone develop a site for my new company and i want to have an ecommerce section. i use quikbooks now and love it and would like to use Intuit’s merchant services for my customer’s shopping cart functions. is this possible in wordpress? if so, any walk-throughs or instructions online?

admin answers:

This will not be a free WordPress at WordPress.com – you can’t advertise there.

For any shopping cart service, you will have to buy a domain name, have it hosted at a hosting company compatible to your shopping cart. You can also have wordpress installed on the domain – but you don’t really need to.

Looking at the intuit.com site, they say hosting packages with large companies such as homestead, godaddy, ultracart are all compatible with their payment method. So what you do is get a hosting package with either the Fantastico (Cpanel product) or other MySQL database – install WordPress on the database – hook it up to the shopping cart (make sure you get a SSL), then connect it to your merchant services. Sounds complicated, but not really.

Your questions about credit card machines

Donna asks…

Does anyone know where the best deals are for credit card machines and reasonable rates?

Tired of calling places for rates just want it in writing. Pricing per credit card charge, rates of credit cards, debit cards, and checks. Monthly rates and rental, lease, or to buy is the better way?

admin answers:

Is anything less fun than deciding on a merchant processor?

Many of the questions you have asked have varying answers depending on your type of business. What type of cards will you be taking? What is your anticipated total volume and average ticket size? Will you swipe cards or will you be taking phone, mail and/or internet orders?

MasterCard and Visa have over 240 different rates for processing credit and debit cards. These rates vary and are divided into categories based on type of card (Visa Rewards, MC Corporate, Debit, etc.) as well as manner of processing (swipe, key entered, etc.) or even the industry. Every merchant processing company is charged the exact same rate by MC and Visa no matter how big or small and then decides on what rates they will then pass on to their merchants. These rates vary depending on the annual amount processed by an individual merchant.

Most reputable processors offer very similar rates. In general, you should look at these processors and decide which one best suits your individual service needs. Those processors who claim massive savings in comparison to the rest of the pack are usually somewhat suspect as they simply can’t offer savings beyond the rates charged to them by MC and Visa and the margins are actually very small. They will make their money off of you somehow so read the fineprint.

That said, if you are expecting relatively low $$ average tickets, look for lower transaction fees and accept slightly higher % rates. For higher average tickets, accept higher transaction fees and look very carefully at the % rates for all types of cards as higher average transactions usually encourage Visa Rewards, MC World and other specialty card usage. Most processors who offer “the lowest rates” charge really high fees for these types of cards. Also, if you expect to key enter many of your transactions, be careful! The rates for these transactions can be very high and must be processed properly or you will be charged the highest rates/fees that can be assessed.

Lastly, your equipment needs should be accessed on an individual basis. DO NOT LEASE! This is where many processing companies make their big dollars and lock you into their services. Never agree to a term agreement – you should be able to change processors whenever you want. Your volume, processing needs and financial situation should dictate whether you buy a new or refurbished machine and what its capabilities are.

If you would like more info, e-mail me at jbordeaux@windriverfinancial.com or give me a call at (920)993-9433. I can help you wade through the muck and find out what you need. If we are a good choice, I’ll let you know. If not, I’ll point you in the right direction.

Does Credit card machines collect my personal info?

My friends store, got broke in to and his credit card machine/Debit machine got rip out of his counter, I used his machine couple times that week,I am afraid of ID theft, Could they get my card info from the machine, I am worry. Please help.

admin answers:

I don’t know the inner workings of those machines but I doubt those machines store any information regarding credit/debit cards. All of the info for the transaction should be done through the phone lines that are hooked up to the machine.

To ease your mind, you should contact the card company/bank that issued the card you used in that machine and ask them about it.

Mark asks…

for all business owners that have the credit card machines how do u go about voiding transaction.?

i was wrongly charged at it was voided. but what do u do on the small machines to void.

admin answers:

Generally a debit would be ran to void a credit and a credit would be ran to void a debit.

Once this is done, you can them proceed with the transaction as you normally would.

For accounting purposes, to void a single transaction would not be recommended.

Helen asks…

Your questions about credit card processing

Donald asks…

why do I end up paying more than I bargained for with my credit card processing company ?

When I signed up for a credit processing service for my store, I thought I am doing my business a favor. Unfortunately, it was the opposite. I spent a lot for fees and charges. Why do I end up paying more than I bargained for with my credit card processing company?

admin answers:

Did you perform a thorough background check with your credit card company ? It could be that you have settled for a substandard firm.
Also, did you make a periodic assessment of what you have been doing to merit such charges? Sometimes, we blame other factors for the mistakes that WE make.
I suggest that you take time to read an Internet article titled ” 6 Credit Card Processing Pitfalls That Merchants Should Watch Out For..” I included the link below. Goodluck!

Where Can I Find Companies That Do Credit Card Transaction Processing For Internet Business?

I’m starting my own online business and need to process credit cards. I’m familiar with paypal and clickbank but would like to see if getting a merchant account with credit card processing features be a better fit for my business.

However, I know that many banks do not like internet businesses, so is there a company that specializes in this type of accounts?

admin answers:

Hi. I agree that local banks aren’t too fond of giving individuals doing internet business a merchant account with credit card processing features.

I know, I’ve been there. That’s why I went with paypal when I started my online ventures.

But there comes a point in time when your sales will eventually be large enough to make you want to go with your own merchant account credit card processing.

But it’s not a step that should be taken lightly. There are many things to watch out for and you have to be well informed before choosing a company to go with.

For my company, when it was time to take the leap, I first searched online, like google and yahoo, and found a few companies that had great features, and some offered free merchant accounts.

One in particular is http://www.electronictransferservice.com .. now I’m not recommending that you go with their service, but at this website, I found a lot of information on credit card processing and companies that provide the service.

You should check out their FAQ page, it’s filled with tons of useful information. Another good thing is you can call them and ask questions and get answers from a real live person. That really helped me learn how all this stuff works.

I eventually went with another company, but at least I had the information I needed so I was able to make the best choice for my business. You will have to look into it yourself and figure out what kind of features you want and need.

But one of the main things is fees. You will want to make sure that you don’t get charged excessively, and that is one of the things you will have to make sure you know about, because there’s a lot of fees involved.

But with the right amount of effort and time that you put into your search for the right company, you should have no problems finding one that fits your internet business.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

Do some background research on your prospective credit card processing company. Ask people. Call fellow merchants and ask for their feedback. Most of all, try to get in touch with your Better Business Bureau office and get as much information as you can.
